AL!VE Newsletter: August 2020
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President Megan Vixie, MPA, CVA, PHR, SHRM-CP

Dear AL!VE Members,

Can you believe it is already August? Sometimes it feels like it is March... 168th! I know across the nation we all have different levels of involvement when it comes to the pandemic we are living in/with. As someone who is based in LA County, we are extremely vigilant as a healthcare organization to do what we can to eradicate this virus! I know you all are working to do the same throughout your organizations and I applaud your efforts to bring back your volunteers and hopefully source new ones as many are seeing the value of helping their community in need.

I also want to remind you to take care of yourself and avoid the pitfalls of burnout as you have adjusted to this new normal. Do not forget about taking time to downshift, rejuvenate and innovate! With that in mind, I would like you to consider participating in this round of the mentor program. We have a stellar group of mentors that can help guide you through these challenging times and help you plan for your future career development.

As always, continue to be safe and healthy as we move into the Fall!

Welcome to Our New Members!

Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Volunteer Engagement

The recent resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in national conversation—sparked by several high-profile murders of Black individuals at the hands of police—has increased the urgency many of us feel to build a more equitable society. Structural change starts with each of us actively working to become more understanding and empathetic advocates for justice.

Join us and build your understanding of essential Diversity, Equity and Inclusion concepts and how to put them into practice in your organization. Leave with next steps for continuing your personal anti-oppression journey, addressing inequity in your volunteer program, and educating volunteers on best practices.

RESOURCE: A Case Study for Advocacy

Michelle Raymer, CVA, AL!VE President Elect

At a time when our organizations are impacted by budget and staffing cuts as well as  concerns for our own health and that of our volunteers, we may not feel like we have the capacity for advocacy. But I would argue that there has never been a more important time to advocate.

You’ve likely heard that perfection is the enemy of progress. It is so true for all of us today. With many of our volunteer programs on hold and  many of our volunteers in limbo about their ability to return to our organizations, advocating for our programs and our profession is essential.

Advocacy can look

Upcoming Days of Service

Need to plan a service project? See upcoming days of service to help you market your need:

World Humanitarian Day (August 19th)
https://www.worldhumanitarianday.org/

World Humanitarian Day (WHD) is held every year on 19 August to pay tribute to aid workers who risk their lives in humanitarian service, and to rally support for people affected by crises around the world. This year, the United Nations has chosen to focus on female humanitarians, sharing the stories of 24 women who are affecting change in cities and towns and villages around the world.

Share these stories and help inspire others to commit to inspiring acts of service, or recreate these for your organization!
