Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President Megan Vixie, MPA, CVA, PHR, SHRM-CP

Happy St. Patrick's Day to those who celebrate! It has now been over one year since the U.S. declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19. Today, it seems the country has reached a turning point and the "luck of the Irish" is on our side!

This has made me think of the difference between risk management and risk avoidance.  I am sure many of you may be experiencing challenges in bringing volunteers (and maybe even employees) back to work knowing that safety is the top priority.  In our roles, we are risk managers: we identify the risks and we figure out ways to manage it so we can move forward.  So when others say it can't be done, this is typically risk avoidance: if you are unable to fully remove the risk, then we shouldn't do it.

If you come across these barriers and people are unable to see past the risk, just listen. Listen to their fears, concerns, and make sure they know you understand and are there to help them through it. While there is the old saying, "no one ever got anywhere by playing it safe," we need to do both, get to our goals and be safe while we go about achieving them.  Be the advocate for moving forward and through the things that scare us. And use your AL!VE community to support one another, get ideas and share inspiration.

We are here for you! Take care and be safe.

Has Your Membership Information Changed?

Cairn Reisch, VP of Membership

We're updating our member database to enhance our member networking benefit!

When you register or access the members only system, you will be prompted to fill out the member skills database.  As this database grows you can search our membership to connect with a colleague regarding a specific skill - such as board development, social media, or fundraising. Please take five minutes and update  your skills on our database.  You can also go in an edit at any time.

Thank you!

PS:  Check to make sure messages from AL!VE aren't going in the spam folder.

New Member Benefit Now Available!

For AL!VE Members with a full membership, you now have access to a great new member benefit:

Announcing the Portfolio Manager!

What is it? A convenient way to store your professional development certificates, transcripts, and the like.  Any .pdf, .jpg, picture, or the like can be stored here.  This will be stored for the duration of your membership.  If you currently hold a CVA, you'll be able to keep all your PDU's in once place, electronically.

How does it work? When you access the members' only side of the AL!VE Website, scroll to the bottom of the page and locate your membership information. On the far right, you'll see the 'Portfolio Manager' tab.  When you click on that, it will open two options - one to view documents assigned to you (coming soon), and one view and to upload a document.  Simply follow the prompts to upload your documents. (Pro Tip:  upload the list of PDU's required for your CVA Renewal, so it's handy).  (You can upload that document here.

What if I'm no longer a member?  Can I still access this information? While you cannot continue to upload documents, past members can request to be emailed the documents for a small fee (TBA)

This is great!  Can it get any better?  YES!  Over the next few months, we will be adding several features:
1.  Automatic issuing of AL!VE Academy PDU certificates to AL!VE members upon completion to you for filing.
2. A fillable form to place the PDU's so you can see where your Renewal Points are credited and where else you need to earn them.
3. Expansion to include other professional certification tracking

We do have the support and encouragement from CCVA for this project, and thanks to Executive Director Faiza Venzant, CVA for her input.

To request a PDU certificate from a past webinar, please email us.

Hosted by Points of Light, this year's theme for National Volunteer Week is Celebrate Service – an opportunity to shine a light on the people and causes that inspire us to serve. Volunteerism empowers individuals to find their purpose, to take their passion and turn it into meaningful change. Volunteer Ireland Wants Your Input

From our colleagues at Volunteer Ireland:

Do you work with supported volunteers?

Covid has changed volunteering and particularly for those with support needs. The Health and Wellbeing team at Volunteer Edinburgh are eager to find out what happened to those people who required support to volunteer because of a disability or health condition.
Did they continue volunteering? Did their volunteering stop? If so, why?
If you are a volunteer centre staff member, volunteer manager, referrer or support worker who works with supported volunteers, please click on the link and complete the survey.  International responses are welcome.

It’ll take less than 5 minutes.
Take the Survey Here

A further survey will be sent out in the next week or so aimed at volunteers.
Cheers!
