AL!VE Newsletter: July 2022
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President Michelle Raymer, CVA

It was re-energizing to meet many of you at the Points of Light conference and the AL!VE happy hour last week in Orlando, Florida. I loved hearing from so many impressive Volunteer Engagement Professionals how you have creatively pivoted as a result of the pandemic to try new things and keep volunteers engaged with your mission. I especially loved hearing how you’ve accessed AL!VE resources (COPs, AL!VE Academies, CVA Study group, Local Association resources, etc) to help you grow as a leader.

These conversations have me looking forward to the hybrid conference in October on Impact Evaluation. I am continuously looking for ways to measure what really matters and better tell the story of the impact of volunteer engagement. I can’t wait to gather great minds from across the US and Canada to dive into this challenge. Registration is open now, so I hope you’ll join us - see more information in this newsletter!

Impact Evaluation: Data that Matters &
Creating the Right Story
View our intro video here

Registration is now OPEN for host and individual sites!

Conference Dates:
October 18 - Pacific & Mountain Broadcast
October19 - Central & Eastern Broadcast
This event is produced and sponsored in conjunction with Better Impact.
www.betterimpact.tv/vmhc
Everyone is being expected to take advantage of data, no matter what their size, mission, or budget. Decision makers want organizations to use data to show their value beyond what the financials show. But it’s more than that.  It’s also knowing what data is important and telling the story behind the data that really matters.
With limited resources, how do agencies partnering with volunteers choose an approach that combines the right mix of data and tools to provide insight relevant to your organization? And where is it going to come from?
This year's Volunteer Management Hybrid Conference will focus on equipping leaders of volunteers with skills to determine what data is useful and how to tell impactful stories using different tools and technologies.

Broadcast October 18 or 19,  host sites will be able to live stream our conference presenters to a live or remote audience, facilitated again this year by Faiza Venzant, CVA.

Volunteering with AL!VE

We Want YOU - Part TWO!
Thank you to AL!VE members Tim Suda, Jannessa Weightman, and Chris Woods who have stepped up to join the Local Associations, Finance, and Marketing committees.  Two new opportunities are available!  Time commitment usually entails one meeting a month, with 1-2 hours working independently on a project or with a team.  Volunteering with AL!VE looks great on a resume, is eligible for CVA recertification hours, and expands your skillset!

These Committees are seeking AL!VE members to join:
  • Marketing: Meets monthly with committee to draft messaging, marketing plans and projects as assigned by the board.  Independent work to maintain and update website, create graphics for Social Media, Outreach, Special Projects, etc.
  • HR & Policy: Meets monthly with responsibilities including reviewing AL!VE Policy and Procedures, and oversight and further development of our internal volunteer engagement strategy. A volunteer is sought to focus on enhancing our internal volunteer engagement processes. If you are interested in joining the HR & Policy Committee, please email Michelle Raymer for more information.
Visit our volunteer page  to learn more about other opportunities, apply and get started!

AL!VE's Standards for Organizational Volunteer Engagement

The AL!VE Standards for Organizational Volunteer Engagement have been up on the website since mid-June and they are already getting some traffic! We encourage you to check out the Standards and think about how you can use them in developing and growing volunteer engagement in your organizations.

Take a look at the Standards here!

After more than a year of research and development, a stellar task force of dedicated AL!VE volunteers created a highly functional and adaptable set of Standards and an accompanying Self-Evaluation Tool to help you use them. Thanks to Jordanya Reeves, Alex Seblatnigg, CAVS, CPXP, Christina Basey, Kelli Crawford, Donna Morton, Emilie Bromet-Bauer, and, of course, Gretchen Jordan, for all your hard work.

These AL!VE Standards are a living document as well as adaptable for use in different organizational situations and industries and by VEPs with different levels of experience.
Give us feedback about the Standards and the Self-Evaluation Tool (SET) through the google form found here.

Special Announcement! AL!VE to Host Service Enterprise Initiative

In case you missed the email we sent on July 13 -

AL!VE members,

I’m pleased to share that AL!VE has been selected by Points of Light to be the administrator of the Service Enterprise Initiative.

In December 2021 Points of Light released a request for proposals to identify a new organizational home and steward for the Service Enterprise program. A “Service Enterprise” is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills to achieve its social mission. Research shows that organizations operating at this level are better led, managed, and have the same results as their peers at half the median budget. The Service Enterprise Initiative includes an assessment, training, and coaching to help organizations in through change management process to achieve that level of operation, with local “hubs” leading the initiative across the country.

After discussions as a Board and with stakeholders, the Board voted unanimously to submit a proposal. Last month, AL!VE was notified that AL!VE was selected to administer the Service Enterprise Initiative. Though details are still being finalized, we wanted to share this exciting news with our members. While we don’t anticipate any changes for our members in the short term, long term we believe that being home to SEI will provide opportunities to advance the field of volunteer engagement and the profession, provide opportunities for members to go through the SEI process, and allow for additional professional development and capacity building opportunities.

We are very excited about the potential this brings and will continue to keep you all updated of the progress.  While we might not have specific answers yet, we’d love to hear your thoughts about how we can work together to advance the field of volunteer engagement.  You can email us here

Thank you for your ongoing work advocating for volunteer engagement,

Michelle Raymer, CVA
AL!VE Board President
