AL!VE Newsletter: September 2022
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President, Michelle Raymer, CVA

It’s fall, and it’s an exciting time for AL!VE! Coming up in October, we’re co-hosting our annual Hybrid Conference. This is an opportunity to come together with peer volunteer engagement professionals across the US and Canada to learn and share ideas. (Don't have a local association participating? You can also register individually to participate virtually with a group of AL!VE members here.)This year’s theme is Impact Evaluation: Data that Matters & Creating the Right Story. I know I, and others I’ve worked with, have been challenged when only asked by leaders or funders for the number of volunteers and volunteer hours. How can we advocate for volunteer engagement by pushing to instead provide a fuller picture of the impact made by those volunteers during those hours? As a part of the Service Enterprise Initiative (more on that later in the newsletter) I was introduced to the Brené Brown quote “Maybe stories are just data with a soul.” I can’t wait to hear from our speakers and from all of you how we can better share the soul of our work.

AL!VE's Emerging Leaders Mentor Program: Meet the Mentors!

Hybrid Conference: Registration Open For Host Sites and Individuals!

This event is produced
and sponsored in conjunction with Better Impact. Learn more, view an informational video, and register here!

Everyone is being expected to take advantage of data, no matter what their size, mission, or budget. Decision makers want organizations to use data to show their value beyond what the financials show. But it’s more than that.  It’s also knowing what data is important and telling the story behind the data that really matters. With limited resources, how do agencies partnering with volunteers choose an approach that combines the right mix of data and tools to provide insight relevant to your organization? And where is it going to come from?
This year's Volunteer Management Hybrid Conference will focus on equipping leaders of volunteers with skills to determine what data is useful and how to tell impactful stories using different tools and technologies.

Broadcast October 18 or 19,  host sites will be able to live stream our conference presenters to a live or remote audience, facilitated again this year by Faiza Venzant, CVA.
*Late Breaking News!*  Maura Fitzpatrick is unable to present, but we are pleased to announce that the incredible Erin Spink will present on the topic.

AL!VE to Administer the Service Enterprise Initiative

As was shared in a special message to members in July, another exciting step for AL!VE is taking on administration of the Service Enterprise Initiative (SEI) from Points of Light, starting October 1st. A Service Enterprise is an organization that fundamentally leverages volunteers and their skills to meet their social missions. Research shows that organizations operating at  this level are better led, managed, and have the same results as their peers at half the median budget. This makes organizations attractive to volunteers who know they’ll have a good experience, and to funders who know their dollars will be well spent and go further. The Service Enterprise Initiative includes an assessment, training, and coaching to help organizations in the change management process to achieve that level of operation.

AL!VE and SEI make a great pairing. SEI will further AL!VE’s mission by advancing the field of volunteer engagement and the profession, provide opportunities for members to go through the SEI process, and allow for additional professional development and capacity building opportunities. AL!VE will be able to enhance Service Enterprise by leveraging our strengths as a national network of leaders who understand what a tremendous asset volunteers are, and our experience providing professional development and support to that national network.

In the coming months AL!VE members, SEI “hubs”, and SEI certified organizations likely won’t notice much of a change as we keep operations consistent during the transition. However, in the coming year, we hope to gather input from stakeholders to enhance and expand offerings for all audiences. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ) was recently released to secure proposals for a contractor or contractors to coordinate the Service Enterprise work. Service Enterprise will be funded initially through a grant from Points of Light, and long-term through hub licenses and fees, grants, and sponsorships. Membership dues will continue to be invested in programming and offerings for members. We look forward to this next chapter in AL!VE’s work, and the opportunity it has for the sector!
