AL!VE Newsletter: January 2023
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President, Michelle Raymer, CVA

Happy New Year!

As I mentioned in December, the work of AL!VE is a team effort, and I’ve learned so much from the amazing leaders I’m surrounded by. The many hours of skilled volunteer support are not always readily apparent from the outside, so I want to spend some time showcasing some of these amazing leaders in our field and of AL!VE.

Cathy Thoma, CVA, has been a volunteer engagement professional for over 8 years, with over a decade of previous experience in HR. In addition to providing leadership in her organization (including leading the volunteer engagement components of her company’s merger), she has been a member of the Corporate Volunteer Council-Twin Cities and served as a member of AL!VE’s Programs and Advocacy committee, including leading a Community of Practice.

Cathy joined the AL!VE board in 2021, and graciously jumped right in, starting her board service as the VP of Programs and Advocacy, one of our biggest committees. As we’ve explored new activities, like Service Enterprise, she’s taken the time to learn what she can, ask thoughtful questions, and ensure we’re being mindful in our approach. She methodically tracks what needs to be done, who is working on what, what they need for support, all while looking at how it leads to the bigger picture of AL!VE’s goals and mission. As Paula Allen, former VP of Programs and Advocacy, shared, “I enjoy working with Cathy for her practical, organized nature, compassion, and drive to uplift our profession.” Cathy’s currently serving as the President-Elect, and I could not be more confident in her ability to lead the organization forward in 2023.

I hope you all have a chance to interact with Cathy in the new year and see her servant leadership in action.

Michelle

AL!VE Service Enterprise - Want to Learn More?

Need to increase your volunteer engagement capacity-building, elevate your volunteer program, or repair the toll COVID has taken on volunteerism?

Leverage an organization-wide change management program that helps non-profits, government entities, and organizations strategically engage volunteers to achieve operational efficiency and greater social impact.

If you are a volunteer convenor, connector, or center: We are welcoming new Service Enterprise hubs and facilitating a comprehensive hub training starting this month that covers how to be a hub, helps you gain an understanding of the program, and offers a Train the Trainer portion so that you will be equipped and ready to deliver the content.

Need a lighter commitment option? Consider hosting a cohort to allow your organization and up to 6 or 7 others to go through the process before you become a hub (also creates a pool of local ambassadors if/when you choose to be a hub).If you are an organization that leverages volunteers to help deliver your mission: We have training hubs across the nation who are offering in-person and virtual cohorts to take organizations through this change management program to more effectively and efficient leverage the volunteers and their skills to deliver your social mission.

February AL!VE Academy:  Transforming Disruption to Impact
Presented by Beth Steinhorn, VQ Volunteer Strategies
Thursday, February 16,  2-3 PM Eastern

Register here to attend!
For generations, engaging volunteers has been a vital strategy for communities to solve problems. Yet, events since 2020 have disrupted how people work and volunteer. While disruption can be devastating, it can also be the impetus to release ourselves from the tyranny of “the way we’ve always done things.” If viewed as an opportunity, disruption invites us to revisit, rethink, and reinvent the way we achieve mission. In this session, hear stories of organizations that unlocked that potential and learn from the lessons which you, too, can apply to sustain your organization regardless of what the future holds. This session will highlight some of the  key themes running through the new book, Transforming Disruption to Impact: Rethinking Volunteer Engagement for a Rapidly Changing World.

Learning Objectives
Participants will:
  • Explore the many disruptions affecting volunteer engagement and nonprofit operations over the past two years.
  • Hear exemplary stories of organizations that engaged volunteers impactfully in recent years.
  • Glean lessons that they can apply to their own organizations to sustain and even increase impact no matter the circumstances.
