AL!VE Newsletter: March 2023
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President, Michelle Raymer, CVA

As we continue to showcase the amazing leaders leveraging their skills to drive the mission of AL!VE forward, I’d like to introduce Christi Brown, AL!VE’s Treasurer.

I don’t know how many people get into the field of volunteer engagement by way of finance and banking, but I’m so grateful that Christi did! Christi, who also serves on the board of CCVA, is the Senior Director of Volunteer Engagement for WellSpan Health where she is responsible for over 4,500 Volunteers and Interns. Prior to that she worked in banking, and she continues to put those skills to good use for AL!VE.

Christi led the process of “leveling-up” AL!VE’s finances through the identification and hiring of a CPA. Additionally, she is working to conduct a review of our financial policies and procedures to maintain consistency and accuracy in our processes. Her work will ensure AL!VE is set up for fiscal accountability and transparency for our board and membership for years to come. This sets AL!VE on a solid foundation for continued growth and success, and Christi’s unique skill set has been essential for making it happen.

Thank you for your service to the profession and AL!VE, Christi!

Michelle

Financial Frameworks for Local Associations
How does the status of your local association affect your filing status? Do you need to hire a CPA or conduct an annual audit for the IRS? How do you add checks and balances into your work for transparency?
Financial matters are one of the most talked about discussion topics in local association meetings, and we have put together a solid presentation to help you gain knowledge and give you a work plan to keep your local association on track. This will be a panel discussion with your peers who have nearly 50 years combined experience in leadership of local professional associations!
We will be sure to discuss the following areas:
  • Role of the board and treasurer
  • Budgets
  • By-Laws
  • Bank Accounts
  • Taxes and filing status
  • Local Government Documentation
  • Accountability
  • When do you need an external audit or CPA?
We will provide valuable resources to participants, so be sure to join us for this knowledge packed session on financial management for local associations.

AL!VE local association members can invite as many attendees as they like; within this registration you can register everyone!

Service Enterprise: Research-Backed Change Management Program

Kayla Paulson, Service Enterprise Administrator

For over more than a decade, non-profits have been leveraging Service Enterprise to help them more effectively & efficiently engage volunteers to deliver their social mission. Not only does this program combine a curriculum designed for a cross-functional organization team to invest dedicated time thinking about strategic volunteer engagement, but is is also guided by a self-assessment diagnostic tool that helps the organization narrow in on strengths and areas of opportunity for the highest impact.

As an organization participating in AL!VE’s Service Enterprise Program or just the Diagnostic and Debrief, you will have a cross-functional multi-level group of up to 10 participants take the Index of Volunteer Engagement based on extensive research conducted by the RGK Center for Philanthropy and Community Engagement. Upon completion a report is created providing the organization benchmarking key drivers to effectively engage the community. To make the information and influenced outcomes manageable it is broken down by three domains: Establishing the Foundation, Best Practices in Volunteer Engagement, and Impact & Outcomes. Each domain is further divided into 4 characteristics. Within each characteristic there are multiple indicators and included suggestions for ways to continuously improve the organization’s practices.

To learn more about the Service Enterprise’s Characteristics and Domains check out this 5-minute video. If you want to find out how your organization can participate in the Service Enterprise Program or start off with the Diagnostic and Debrief, contact Kayla Paulson at ServiceEnterprise@VolunteerAL!VE.org.
