AL!VE Newsletter: September 2021
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President Megan Vixie, MPA, CVA, PHR, SHRM-CP

Happy Fall! For those of you working in education or have school-aged children, I wish you the best in navigating this hybrid school year! Our worlds seem to be changing and adapting yet again and I commend you all for powering through. This community of professionals we have here continues to amaze and inspire me.

And since you are all so amazing and inspiring, please consider applying to become a member of our board of directors for 2022-2024.  We are making greater efforts to diversify our board in many ways so we have cross-representation that reflects our field.  We also have many high-level initiatives to accomplish in our strategic plan (as we are almost half-way through our 5-year planning period already!) and we would love to have fresh perspectives get us across that finish line. You can always reach out to me or members of our board if you have any questions.

Our Hybrid Conference focusing on diversity, equity and inclusion is also coming up! If you do not have a local association you are registering with, you can register with our AL!VE group to attend the conference!  More information regarding this is in this newsletter. I hope to see you there as it promises to be enlightening and action-oriented so we can apply this to our work and our lives.

As always, continue to be safe and healthy!
Megan

Recent Industry Research

MAVA Executive Summary on Co-creating Racial Equity in Volunteer Engagement
MAVA has been doing research about race equity in volunteerism and recently conducted listening sessions with BIPOC community members  to learn more about systemic inequities in volunteer engagement and imagine new systems of volunteerism. Learn more about their findings here.

TEVA survey results from CCVA
This past year, 546 CVAs from Canada and the USA participated in the Technology Evolution in Volunteer Administration project with Arizona State University's Mark Hager.  Funded by Americorps, the focus of the project is technology adoption, use, and struggles by volunteer administrators during the COVID-19 pandemic.  Top line results from the survey that was conducted this year are now available at cvacert.org/teva.

Presented by Gerald (Jerry) Pannozzo, CVA and the Local Associations Committee
(This webinar is intended for leadership in Local Associations of Volunteer Engagement Professionals.)
We are leaders of volunteer engagement. This workshop will explore how ‘best practices’ we apply to our volunteer engagement programs can be applied when  staffing the leadership of our local professional associations.

  • This interactive session will focus on three areas: personal stories regarding the application of best practices as applied to volunteering with local associations;
  • Ways AL!VE can support local associations; examples from a local association regarding successful efforts related to succession planning
  • A personal exercise for each participant – applying  the session discussions to identify one goal/action item that you can take back to your local association.

New York Association for Volunteer Administration (NYAVA):
Volunteers and Donors: Making the Connection

Tuesday September 21, 2021 3:30- 5pm Eastern, Via Zoom
Organizations frequently treat those who donate their time and talents differently than those who donate their money. Ideally those working in Development and Volunteer Engagement should be working collaboratively but more often they operate in silos. This session explores why collaboration between Development and Volunteer Engagement is essential to the success of your organization. The reality is that all supporters – whether they contribute time or money – are integral to your mission and can help extend your impact in the community. Working together can assure that both time donors and financial ones are fully engaged as advocates for your organization’s mission. In this workshop, participants will identify the key supporters in their organization, brainstorm ways to create greater connection between these groups, and spend time developing an action plan to get started.
Visit NYAVA's website for more information or to register.
Member & Partner Org Fee: $25
*Members of ALIVE Organizations should select the discounted rate as a partner org
Non-Members: $50

Be sure and save the date for the second annual Local Associations Summit scheduled for November 4, 2021.  Registration open soon.
