AL!VE Newsletter: October 2021
Association of Leaders in Volunteer Engagement

President's Message

AL!VE Board President Megan Vixie, MPA, CVA, PHR, SHRM-CP

As we head deeper into the Fall, my thoughts are with all of you who are still helping your communities from the natural disasters our country has faced in the last several months. This is a continuous effort that often takes months or even years to heal from. Please take advantage of our new Community of Practice for Emergency Management that begins this coming Thursday. Talk with your colleagues who are facing similar challenges and lean on one another for support.

In partnership with Better Impact, AL!VE will be hosting our annual live-stream conference, "Diversity, Equity & Inclusion: Real Impact for the Real World." We have over 40 local associations and sites that will be hosting across the U.S. and Canada. This promises to be an insightful and inspiring conference and I am looking forward to the speaker line-up we have in store! If you are not already attending with a local association, consider joining AL!VE's virtual group.

Lastly, a special thank you to all who have applied to serve on our Board of Directors for the 2022 elections. The Board Development Committee will begin the interviewing and selection process over this next month.  They will prepare a slate of board members which will require your vote of approval coming at the end of this month. I am continually amazed by the level of talent and expertise that exists within our association and am looking forward to what next year will bring with the addition of the next cohort of board leaders!

Take care and stay healthy everyone!

International Volunteer Manager Day - What is Excellence?

November 5, International Volunteer Managers Day - Celebrate YOU!

The Mission of Volunteer Managers Day:
We celebrate the profession of volunteer leadership because:
Volunteer Managers have the skills and knowledge to help people be part of the solution in meeting community needs. Even in cynical times, they practice the art of the possible.

Volunteer Managers change lives — both the lives of volunteers themselves and of those served by well-led volunteers. It is a life-changing profession. Volunteer managers provide the leadership and direction that allows people to build a good and just society and to mend the social fabric. Without professional leadership, people’s time, talents and efforts could be wasted.

A well-run volunteer program shows the community, including potential donors, that the organization is not afraid of public scrutiny and involvement and endeavors to make the most efficient use of monetary assets.

Well-led volunteers become an advocacy and public relations force for an agency or program — a force no amount of money could buy.

MAVA Shifting Environment Survey

Minnesota Alliance for Volunteer Advancement (MAVA) Shifting Environment Survey
Help MAVA understand how changes we’ve seen in the past 18 months have affected today’s volunteerism! Complete their 2021 Shifting Environment Survey to share YOUR experiences – what’s happening with your communities, organizations, and volunteers, as we adjust to altered expectations and new realities. MAVA wants to hear from people working with volunteers in all types of settings, and every level of experience; they also invite responses from multiple staff members at the same organization to help us better understand our changes at the program level. Please fill out the survey only once, although you may receive an invitation from several sources. It should take about 15 - 20 minutes to complete – an investment of your time that we greatly appreciate. To show their gratitude, survey respondents can enter a drawing for a $25 discount on a 2021 MAVA training or event.
Preliminary results will be available by the end of 2021 at www.mavanetwork.org; a full report, including recommendations for harnessing trends uncovered through the survey, will be published in early 2022.
